GooderTherapy vs Psychology Today: What Therapists and Clients Should Know
If you've ever searched for a therapist online, you've probably ended up on Psychology Today. It's the default. It's been around since 2003 and its therapist directory has become the go-to starting point for millions of people looking for mental health support. That's not nothing. Brand recognition and scale matter, and Psychology Today has both.
But after spending time on that platform as someone who has been in therapy for fifteen years, I kept running into the same problem. Every profile looked the same. Credentials, certifications, a headshot, and a paragraph the therapist wrote about themselves. Nothing that told me what it was actually like to sit across from this person.
That's why I built GooderTherapy. Not to replace Psychology Today, but to fill the gap it leaves.
What Psychology Today Does Well
Let's be honest about this. Psychology Today's directory is massive. They have hundreds of thousands of therapist profiles across the country and a domain authority that puts them on the first page of Google for almost every therapy-related search you can think of. If you're a therapist, being listed there puts you in front of a large audience. If you're a client, it's a comprehensive starting point for finding someone in your area.
They've also been doing this for a long time. The platform is stable, well known, and trusted by both therapists and clients.
Where the Gap Is
Psychology Today profiles are built by therapists, for therapists. Every piece of information on a profile was put there by the therapist themselves. That's not inherently bad, but it means what you're reading is marketing, not feedback.
When you're trying to decide whether to trust someone with your mental health, a self-written profile only tells you so much. What you really want to know is what their current and former clients think. What is this person actually like to work with? Do they challenge you? Do they listen? Do they help?
Psychology Today doesn't answer those questions. GooderTherapy does.
How GooderTherapy Is Different
Real Client Reviews
GooderTherapy is built around anonymous client reviews. Real people sharing honest feedback about what it's actually like to work with a therapist. Not what the therapist says about themselves.
Every review is verified before publishing. No review goes live automatically. What gets published is an AI-anonymized summary, not your raw words. We delete your email address when your review goes live. Reviews with low ratings are held for 48 hours before publishing, giving reviewers time to reflect and edit or remove something written in a moment of frustration. Vague emotional venting doesn't meet our bar for publication. A real person reviews everything flagged before any decision is made.
Free for Therapists. Completely.
Psychology Today charges therapists $29.95 per month to be listed. GooderTherapy is free. Not a free tier with a paid upgrade - just free. There are no ads, no subscriptions, and no paid placement. No one can pay for a better spot in results. Reviews come first, and claiming your profile, which is free, breaks ties above unclaimed listings.
A Real Analytics Dashboard
When a therapist claims their profile on GooderTherapy they get access to a free analytics dashboard showing how many people viewed their profile, how often they appeared in search results, how many people clicked their contact information, and how their reviews break down over time. Psychology Today doesn't offer anything like this.
A Claimed Badge
Therapists who claim their profile get a Claimed badge at the top of their profile page. It tells potential clients that a real person is behind the listing and actively managing it.
Built-in Safeguards Because Therapy Is Different
This isn't a restaurant review site. Clients in therapy are sometimes vulnerable, and a session can end with an upset client even when nothing went wrong. GooderTherapy has moderation built specifically around that reality. Reviews with low ratings are held for 48 hours. Vague emotional venting doesn't meet our bar for publication. A real person reviews everything flagged before any decision is made.
What GooderTherapy Doesn't Have (Yet)
Honesty matters here. Psychology Today has decades of brand recognition and millions of existing users. GooderTherapy is newer and smaller. We have a growing directory of therapists across Tennessee, Alabama, and beyond, and real client reviews are coming in. But we're early and we know it.
One practical note for clients: insurance filtering is available but insurance data is still being filled in across profiles. If you filter by insurance and get limited results, try browsing without that filter and reaching out to therapists directly to confirm coverage.
Who GooderTherapy Is For
For clients: If you want to find a therapist based on what real clients say about working with them rather than what the therapist says about themselves, GooderTherapy is built for you. Start with our AI chatbot - just tell it what you're dealing with and it will help you find your best match.
For therapists: If you're already paying $29.95 a month to be listed on Psychology Today, you should know that GooderTherapy offers everything you get there - profile visibility, search discovery, the ability to edit your own information - plus a real analytics dashboard, client reviews, and a Claimed badge. For free. It takes about five minutes to claim your profile.
Neither platform is the complete answer on its own. But if you're only using one, it might be worth knowing what the other one offers.
